Brake lathes really aren't a necessity for most shops at least in California. Machining rotors is only used to save the useful life out of a rotor in the event a bent hub or overheating the rotor damages it. This corrects either lateral runnout and/or thickness variation. New pads will have an easier time burnishing on a new rotor or old rotor. This is because the new rotors have a crosshatched (smoother finish) to let the new pads break in and seat right. And the older used rotors are going to have already the defined grooves and glaze (glazed rotors is normal) which helps the brake pad slow the car down without eating away at the pad or the rotor as harshly. The glaze is what actually lets the pad stick to the rotor instead of "erasing" the rotor like a pencil eraser removing lead from paper.

Given all that information… It's not really worth the time/cost to machine a rotor than it is to buy a replacement which is about the same cost as labor at a fraction of the install time.

Just CL'd a 2-post car lift. WoW…$1600 for a new one and $900 for a used unit. This is very affordable.

So as a home ‘shop’ how do you cover your ASSet CYA. I have been working on family cars and trucks for years and been buying the same tools your talking about because I need them but I want to put them and my knowledge to use to help people and make some money

Great video. I'm thinking I can get away with an 80 gallon 2 stage ingersoll compressor but I'd love to get a 120 gallon any thoughts? How much more expensive is it to run a 10 to 15 horse 3 phase motor to fill the larger tank? I'll probably be running at most 2 bay's with lifts at my house but probably just 1. Only thing we disagree on is the brake lathe. Rotors have become too cheap to waste time cutting the old ones and running the risk of a comeback from warped rotors from lack of heat dissipation on a thinner rotor. Anyways thanks for the awesome vids

Go over to electric tools and forego the huge compressor today. Just a small one all you need today. The battery impacts are superior to air.

no need for a brake lathe anymore ..rotors are so cheap for new,not worth it.i would add a torch kit for sure.even a spring compressor is on its way out as the brake lathe is.more cost effective to put whole assemblies in rather that spend the time putting springs on worn out struts.good info though

I'll pass on the brake lathe… Chinese rotors are just too cheap. There are a lot of tools you need more than that. Torches…. welder….
